The GREAT Initiative is delighted to work in partnership with Femmes Africa Solidarité (FAS), a respected African NGO established by African women to help African women.
Operating within the broad remit to protect and promote women’s human rights in Africa, FAS’s focus is to empower African women so that they have the ability to assume greater positions of responsibility within their communities.
FAS is in fact one of the founding members of the African women’s peace movement; indeed, the AU has given FAS the honour of chairing its Women’s Movement for its ‘Decade of Women’.
In little more than a decade, Femmes Africa Solidarité has made some remarkable steps towards gender equality. Alongside acclaimed success in bringing women into the peace process in conflict zones, it has made significant steps towards gender equality throughout Africa, playing an instrumental role both in the adoption of UN Security Resolution 1325 and also of The Solemn Declaration of Gender Equality in Africa. Vital work around the implementation of the SDGEA by all African States has been undertaken by the ‘Gender is my Agenda’ campaign (GIMAC) under the leadership of FAS.
FAS’s founder and executive director Bineta Diop has been dedicated to improving women’s lives in Africa for almost three decades. Her enthusiasm, determination and her belief in a bright and fair future for women inspires The GREAT Initiative to support her extraordinary and generous work.
Femme Africa Solidarité’s vision is quite simple - that women can and must play a vital role in conflict prevention, resolution, and peace building.
