The PanAfrican Centre for Gender, Peace and Development

The GREAT Initiative is to support FAS in establishing a centre of excellence in Senegal that will provide women - and men too - with a sound knowledge base regarding gender relations in conflict, and strategies on how to influence policies on peace.

Building blocks for peace

Unique of its kind, the Centre will be exclusively dedicated to training and researching the interaction between gender, peace and development. It will help to bridge the gap between African leaders and those at grassroots level, as well as encouraging the full involvement of younger peace builders.

For example, the ‘Economic empowerment’ module is focused on helping women rebuild their lives after war devastated their country by assisting in the transformation and expansion of their businesses into consolidated enterprises, generating employment and economic benefits in the entrepreneurs’ communities. Women are equipped with the skills and the knowledge, are empowered by the expertise and experience of mentors and will be connected to a network of professionals in order to exchange ideas, and find financial support.

Groundwork has started and the land has been promised by the Senegalese government. Now, funds need to be raised to build the Centre and administer its future programs.

GREAT’s involvement

The GREAT Initiative is delighted to offer its support by seeking to raise funds for this Centre, bringing this erstwhile initiative to the attention of the international community.

The vision is for this first Centre to become the first of several around Africa that will empower women, enable the family unit to function, and allow the next generation to build on the achievements of their mothers’ participation.
