In the western world, there is a fine tradition of seeking to help those less fortunate than ourselves. And the commitment to give, to be involved, often starts at school.
One strand of The GREAT Initiative, in partnership with one of the UK’s leading networks of independent girl’s schools, is to create projects designed to enable pupils, their parents and alumni to participate in raising funds towards important gender projects in Africa identified or instigated by the Gender Rights & Equality Action Trust.
It is our hope that in making female-dominated communities at home aware of the realities of gender imbalance in Africa, they will be highly motivated to assist their African sisters in gaining access to better education and educational resources in their own countries. We seek to ensure that the issue of gender equality becomes a part of the curriculum at these schools in the first instance, and every school thereafter.
GREAT has a firm commitment towards realising the fullest potential of this project and is aware that once up-and-running, the programme will provide us with the template necessary to roll out similar initiatives nationwide. Just one school - its pupils, pupils’ parents, teachers and alumni - can become an agent for change. Fifty such schools, a far more powerful force. Every school, of course, a voice that simply cannot be ignored.
